Essential Guide to Air Conditioner Vent

The air conditioner vent is a vital part of your home’s cooling system. It’s the duct that carries cool air from your air conditioner to the rest of your home.

It is not uncommon for people to be confused about what the AC vent on their air conditioner does. And with a lot of misinformation out there, it can be tough to figure out if you should open or close your vents and why. We’ve created this guide to help answer these questions and more so that you know exactly how an AC operates.

What Is an Air Conditioner Vent There for?

The main purpose of AC vents is to maintain the air pressure in your home or office. In addition, these small openings also help to maintain air quality by filtering out dust and debris that could make its way into your home. Installing vents in your ceiling or walls can save you from potential costs in the future.

Is my AC Vent Open or Closed?

AC Vents Should Always be Kept Open. Closing air vents can have a detrimental effect on your AC system, and the benefits of keeping them open will outweigh the costs. Keep a close eye on your energy bills to determine whether it makes any difference to close the vents or to keep them open for reduced heating and cooling costs.

Typical AC systems are specifically designed for the size of the space to be cooled in a home or office. This ensures that the cooling system will be able to cool or heat the entire square footage contained in that indoor living space. Closing any of the AC vents can have a detrimental impact on the system’s performance, and it is therefore not recommended by AC experts.

Closing AC air vents in a typical home will not translate into cost savings on energy bills. The best way to save on energy consumption is to maintain your home’s temperature at a constant temperature of about 78 degrees and have the system serviced regularly.

What Happens When the AC Vents are Blocked?

When you block a supply vent, it doesn’t mean that the air is shut off. The system will still push out air against the blocked vent. The constant push of air against a blocked air vent can cause an increase in pressure and reduce adequate airflow. The combination of these two factors can cause major damage to the AC unit over time.

A damaged AC system can lead to the release of carbon monoxide resulting in leaky ductwork. The damage caused by this problem will result in the AC utilizing more energy over time and increased energy bills.

How do I know if my AC vents are Clogged?

The most common sign of clogged AC air ducts is fluctuating temperatures experienced throughout the building. If the airflow is affected in only one or two rooms, it means those particular air ducts may be clogged.

To test this, turn on the AC unit and when the fan is activated, check the vents in each room to determine whether there is a noticeable lack of airflow.  Check the vents to ensure that they are not clogged.

If there is no detectable blockage, check the air filter. A clogged air filter will affect airflow throughout the entire system. To check whether the filter is the reason for restricted airflow, remove the air filter completely. If there is still a lack of airflow, there may be a blockage in the duct leading to that particular vent.
